Saving the Wild Betta smaragdina: A Grassroots Conservation Effort in Thailand

Threathened natural betta habitat in Thailand

At ECA-Tranship, we are deeply committed to supporting conservation initiatives that protect the native fish species we work with. That’s why we’ve proudly donated to a passionate grassroots effort led by Frank, a dedicated hobbyist and conservationist based in Thailand, who is fighting to save a wild population of Betta smaragdina—a stunning native species whose habitat is on the brink of extinction.

Save the Betta smaragdina!

A Vanishing Oasis

For as long as Frank can remember, a small, lush wetland surrounded by farmland was home to a unique and genetically distinct colony of Betta smaragdina. But in recent months, the landscape has changed dramatically. With no government programs in place to protect these habitats, the area is being cleared for agriculture. Fallen trees and sediment have overtaken the once-thriving ecosystem, and the fish have been pushed into a tiny shrinking pool—the last remnant of what was once a sanctuary.

To make matters worse, the land is privately owned, and despite Frank’s pleas, the only way to stop the destruction would be to purchase the land outright—an unattainable goal due to high costs.

Why This Matters

Betta smaragdina is not just a beautiful fish; it’s a symbol of regional biodiversity. Unlike captive-bred strains, this population carries wild genetics that are increasingly rare and vital to the species’ long-term survival. Moving them to an existing wild location isn’t an option—doing so could disrupt other fragile ecosystems or result in interbreeding with different genetic lines.

We’ve already seen the devastating effects of inaction. Last year, a population of wild Betta splendens was completely lost due to a sudden housing development. Without warning or time to evacuate the fish, the habitat was destroyed—forever.

A Proven Solution: Habitat Reconstruction

This isn’t Frank’s first time stepping up. A few years ago, he created a successful conservation pond on his own land. That habitat is still thriving today, home to a relocated population of Betta smaragdina that has continued to breed and flourish. Now, he’s doing it again.

Frank is donating a portion of his own land once more to create a permanent, protected pond for the remaining fish. The goal is to replicate their original environment: shallow, plant-rich edges for spawning, and a deeper center that taps into the groundwater to ensure a steady water supply year-round.

How You Can Help

The primary expense is excavation—digging a properly structured pond that mirrors natural conditions. Since Frank is providing the land himself, the cost is significantly reduced. But he still needs help covering the machinery and labor costs.

That’s where you come in.

Why ECA-Tranship Supports This Project

At ECA-Tranship, we believe conservation starts at the source. This is not just about fish—it’s about respecting the balance of ecosystems, supporting local stewards of biodiversity, and ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty of wild species in their natural habitat.

Frank’s project is proof that one individual—with passion, knowledge, and community support—can make a lasting impact. We’re honored to support this mission and encourage others in the aquatics community to join us.
